I tried leveling with an addon, and obviously - without one. Most of my characters didn't use one, but for my last one (the currently active warrior alt) I've actually used a WoW-Pro leveling addon, which was both free, and good for what I needed.
Why use an addon in the first place?
To speed things up, obviously. Leveling addons or any other form of leveling guides both help and take away from your experience, making lots of decisions automatic, like your car's sat-nav (if you have one).
If you are an explorer, or simply take pride in how well you know WoW (logical question would be - what are you doing here then? lol... ), then using a guide or a leveling addon would sound almost offensive to you. There, there, my friend, I've been through that phase too.
In my personal experience however, even the experienced players reach a point of wanting to have "training wheels" on, get a helping hand, and optimize my leveling path even further. It's never too late to learn, as they say, right?
So, first reason to use an addon in my opinion would be if you don't know what you are doing, AND don't feel like exploring (and making your own mistakes perhaps) either. I sincerely hope you are not like that, because there's nothing like experiencing content for the first time, on your own, without someone constantly telling you where to go and what to do...
The second reason, as briefly mentioned above, would be to have the opposite effect of a post-burnout from many alts and levels in WoW, where you still find leveling and bringing up a new fresh alt enjoyable and somewhat calming experience after a long stressful day at work. So using a (good) addon then is one way to go about it.
What addon do I recommend to use
OK, let's say you've read all of the above and still decided that you want to use an addon. Which one to use? Free? Paid? No in-game addon at all, perhaps, and just an online guide that you check back with, if you get lost?
Plain and simple, I'd use the full version of WoW-Pro Leveling Addon that those lovely fellows give away for free, and that is crowd-sourced, i.e. I believe the community members can freely submit their own leveling guides to be included in the next addon release, at the discretion and passing quality control of the owner (makes sense).
So, let's see what's good and bad about it:
The good
It's free
It's reasonably up to date (with a few exceptions - I'll post another article on this soon)
Some guides tell you where to get hidden treasure in Pandaria, which gives you loot and XP - not something you'd often think of doing yourself, or pay attention to while running around (unless you know exactly what you're doing!)
It does the necessary minimum to get the job done, without any added gimmicks or complexities
It works well with the infamous Tom-Tom addon (but that's pretty standard)
The bad
It's distributed through addon websites and services as a Trial version, making you go to WoW-Pro website and download the full version from there. It's still free, but adds a slightly annoying step before you can start properly using it. I can't blame the WoW-Pro guys for wanting to draw some traffic to their website though...
Some guides need revising - I'm saying it as a person who JUST leveled a warrior using this addon, and can confirm that some stuff is out of date.
Guides are mostly OK, but somewhat inconsistent in terms of their quality. Some earlier guides (e.g. those written by Jame) are really good and detailed, while a couple of higher level ones skip a few important comments here and there, which could be disruptive.
Wrapping it up
TL;DR: in my opinion do not use an addon if you want to experience brand new content (e.g. leveling first character through a freshly released WoW expansion), but use a good addon to maximize leveling speed and XP yield on the subsequent alts. You can always turn the addon off, if it starts bugging you.
