Elders Scrolls Online Leveling Guide: It's Complicated

 on Monday, April 6, 2015

A few years ago, Facebook started allowing people to choose "it's complicated" as a relationship status. For the many, many people who didn't fit neatly into a single category. Elder Scrolls, an MMO based off a long running single player RPG series, has brought "It's complicated" to gaming. ESO wasn't content to make a traditional-style MMO set in their world. Instead, they tried to bring their systems of crafting, combat, and other things, into the MMO. The result is works surprisingly well, with a high amount of flexibility and unheard of character customization available. The result is also that normally simple systems MMO player has been familiar with for years, have gotten complicated.

Usually, when we talk about leveling in an MMO, it's pretty straightforward--you play the game, you earn xp from beating enemies and completing quests, you level up, you gain more powers, you beat more enemies and complete, more quests, etc., etc. And any Elder Scrolls online leveling guide that told you leveling works that way in ESO would be correct, and completely wrong.

Yes, your character does level by gaining xp in the usual ways, and when your character levels they gain skill points and a single stat point you can spend to make them more powerful. However, there is a lot more to leveling in ESO. For instance, once you use a skill point to buy a skill, you don't use additional skill points to level it up, you use it. As it is used, it gains its own xp and levels up over time--the more you use it, the more powerful it is. You also don't just get skill points through leveling up. Crystal shards are scattered throughout the world of Tamriel, and each time you find one you get a skill point (exploration incentive, anyone?) you can also get skill points from reading books.

So while character leveling in ESO is pretty straightforward (play, gain xp, level up), if you want your character to grow and gain new abilities, you need to think about a bit more than how much xp you have at the moment. You need to look at how much xp your different skills have, where you can find extra skill points, which skills you want to use more so they level up faster, and more.
All that said, you can see why we say leveling up is complicated.

Straight leveling--if you want your character to gain character levels as fast as possible, the best thing to do is solo play and stick to the quest lines. As always, higher level enemies give more xp, helping you level faster, so if you can take on stronger enemies and quest lines, go for it.
Skill leveling--skills level as you use them. Keep track of your skill xp, and put the most use into skills you want to see level up the most. ESO skills don't have cool downs, so you use them as fast as you can hit the buttons. Base your tactics on a combination of what skills, work best now, and what skills you want to have strong in the future.

Skill points--most full-length Elder Scrolls online leveling guides will include a guideline for how many skill points you want to gain at each level. However, you need to decide for yourself whether you'd rather have a whole bunch of skills at moderate levels, or just a few skills at high levels. You can only use so many skills at once, so once you pick up more skill points than you have space on your hot bar, some skills will end up sitting unused for periods of time. On the other hand, only getting a few skills means you get all your skills leveled up relatively quickly, but you lose flexibility in your skill options.

Crafting--crafting is a non-leveling or skill related method of increasing your characters power levels. Crafting skills allow you to create equipment that gives you bonuses in combat. Make and trade with other players to get the best equipment of all types. Time put into craft is time you aren't spending leveling up directly, so you need to decide of the trade off of equipment based bonuses is worth the slower leveling pace. At the same time, searching for crafting materials is also a great way to find Crystal Shards and books to gain extra skill points.

And that completes our mini Elder Scrolls online leveling guide. Short and sweet, but it covers the basics. Share your suggests for leveling in ESO in the comments.

ESO is pretty straightforward (play, gain xp, level up), if you want your character to grow and gain new abilities, you need to think about a bit more than how much xp you have at the moment. You need to look at how much xp your different skills have, where you can find extra skill points, which skills you want to use more so they level up faster, and more. ESO leveling guide provide extra skill points.
